James Marshall Fellowship Research Support for Children's Author/IllustratorThe Northeast Children’s Literature Collection ( Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, University of Connecticut) in partnership with the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is pleased to offer children’s authors and illustrators funding to use the substantial book and author/illustrator manuscript collections available in Storrs, Connecticut, in support of new writing and illustration projects. James Marshall FellowshipThe James Marshall Fellowship is awarded annually to promising authors or illustrators in the creation of text or illustrations intended for a children’s book, magazine, or other publication made possible by research using the unique materials in the Northeast Children's Literature Collection at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. For details of the Collection go to http://nclc.uconn.edu. Deadline: Applications are accepted throughout the year as long as funds are available. Applicants will receive a notification if their proposal is accepted within one month of the receipt of their application. Grant funds are paid following completion of the requirements of the grant which includes the public presentation and there is a minimum processing period of eight weeks from the time a grant is accepted. Grant Amount: A maximum of two awards ranging from $500 to $1200 will be made as funds are available. SelectionJames Marshall Fellowship Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who are selected by a committee composed of the Curator of the Northeast Children's Literature Collection, a representative of the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a faculty member from the University of Connecticut. To be eligible, the candidate must demonstrate the significance of the project and the need to use the Northeast Children's Literature Collection, including a tentative budget, his or her credentials, a current resume, and two letters of support. Please attach a description, no more than two pages, of your project and include a preliminary list of the manuscript materials or book collections within the Northeast Children's Literature Collection at the Dodd Research Center which you believe will support your research.

Travel Grant Recipient ResponsibilitiesTravel grants recipients agree to conduct their research at the Dodd Research Center as indicated in their proposal, agree to meet with University faculty and library staff to discuss their research as needed or requested, and to give a public lecture based on the outcome of their research performed at the Dodd Center in the Northeast Children's Literature Collection. .
