Abstract: The University Senate is a legislative body responsible for establishing minimum rules and general regulations pertaining to all undergraduate schools and colleges. The collection contains the officials minutes of the organization as well as reports, studies and working materials of the Senate and its associated committees. Also included are the minutes of an earlier faculty governance and policy decision making group.

History

The University Senate is a legislative body responsible for establishing minimum rules and general regulations pertaining to all undergraduate schools and colleges. The Senate also is responsible for establishing general educational policy in areas not reserved to the Board of Trustees, to the administration, or to the several faculties. The Curricula and Courses Committee, a committee of the University Senate, was established in 1929.

Prior to the establishment of the University Senate, the faculty of the institution met regularly to establish and review policy, discuss issues and provide goverance for the campus academic operations.

Scope and Content

The records consist of minutes of meetings of the Senate and its associated committees, a variety of reports, information on new or redesigned courses and administrative files.

Also included are the minutes of the faculty, prior to the establishment of the University Senate.

Arrangement

Series I: Curricula and Courses Committee Records (undated, 1929-1989) contains the working files of the committee responsible for the approval of new courses, changes in established courses and curricula and deletion of courses no longer appropriate.

Series II: Executive Committee Records (1963-1994) contains the records of the executive committee of the organization.

Series III: Growth and Development Committee Records (1962-1985) inlcudes reports, minutes, studies and programs focused on the development of the University.

Series IV: Scholastic Standards Committee Records (1932-1981) contains information regarding the establishment of standards for evaluating students. Similar materials can be found in the records of the Committee on Degrees with Distinction for the years 1930-1948.

Series V: Other Committee Records (undated, ca. 1943-1982) inlcudes documentation created or collected by other Senate committees.

Series VI: University Senate Records (1940-2000) contains reports, minutes and some correspondence. University Senate minutes and attachments are available online from 2002 to the present.

Series VII: Faculty Meeting minutes (1893-1899) contains the minutes of the meetings of the campus faculty.
