History

Kenneth G. Wilson came to the University of Connecticut in 1952 as a Professor of English. He was employed in that capacity until 1967, serving as Department Head from 1966-1967. In 1967, he was made Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and then promoted to the position of Vice President for Academic Programs in 1970. He became the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1974, a position which replaced that of the Provost. Wilson served in that post until 1981.

Scope and Content

The collection contains administrative records, correspondence, reports, minutes, publications and other materials pertaining to the administration of the academic segments of the University. The collection documents the policies, programs and major issues of concern for the institution from the mid 1970s through the early 1980s.

Arrangement

This collection contains the records of the Vice President for Academic Affairs Office for the administration of Kenneth G. Wilson, who served in that capacity from 1974-1981. The records are arranged in twenty series.

Series I: University Administration (undated, 1951-1981) contains files on the University Senate, Admissions Office, Registrar's Office, and the E. O. Smith High School.

Series II: Policy and Planning (undated, 1952-1983) includes information about the Board of Higher Education, affirmative action, legislative and budget matters, and personnel.

Series III: Schools and Colleges (undated, 1939-1981) contains various files on each school and college of the University. The files include faculty minutes, Curriculum and Courses information, departmental information, and files on the E. O. Smith High School

Series IV: University Units (undated, 1952-1981) includes information about the Computer Center, Library, Roper Center, and the Trustee-Administration-Faculty-Student Committee (TAFS).

Series V: Branch Campuses (undated) contains files on branches of the University, as well as the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Series VI: University Related Organizations (undated, 1967-1979) includes files on AAUP, New England Land Grant Universities, Phi Beta Kappa, Selective Service, and the Joint Operations Committee.

Series VII: Non-University Organizations (undated, 1955-1982) contains files on the Council of Presidents, Board of Higher Education, the Northeast Association of Schools and Colleges, and other organizations.

Series VIII: Centers and Institutes (1968-1981) includes files on the New England Research Application Center, the Institute of Public Service, the Afro-American Cultural Center, the Institute of World Affairs, and other centers and institutes on campus.

Series IX: Campus Unrest (undated, 1968-1974) contains information about demonstrations and other campus conflicts, including problems in the Anthropology Department in 1974 and problems with Dow Chemical in 1968.

Series X: President's Office (undated, 1970-1982) includes files on various University presidents, affirmative action, the UConn Foundation, and the Office of Institutional Research.

Series XI: Subject Files (undated, 1962-1981) contains the general files of Vice President Wilson and includes such topics as personnel, honorary degrees, the Registrar's Office, and special academic and enhancement programs.

Series XII: Vice President for Finance and Administration (undated, 1964-1982) includes files on the budget, financial aid, and tuition. There are also files on the Computer Center and Public Safety Division.

Series XIII: Vice President for Graduate Education and Research (undated, 1976-1981) contains files on the Research Foundation as well as graduate degree programs and financial aid for graduate students.

Series XIV: Vice President for Health Affairs (undated, 1966-1979) includes information about the Health Center, Health Science Programs, and the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Professions.

Series XV: Vice President for Student Affairs and Services (undated, 1967-1981) contains general files, as well as files on career planning, student employment, student evaluation of teachers, and special student services.

Series XVI: University Committees (undated, 1970-1981) includes files on the Long Range Planning Committee, and the Committee on Independent Study.
