HistoryThe Institute of Water Resources was established in 1964 to encourage basic and applied research and to develop technical competence in the broad field of water resources. The Institute's mission is stipulated by the Federal Water Resources Research Act and involves two programmatic responsibilities. The first is to plan, conduct and otherwise arrange for competent research that fosters (a)the entry of new research scientists into the water resources fields (b)the training and education of future water scientists, engineers and technicians, (c)the preliminary exploration of new ideas that address water problems or expand understanding of water and water-related phenomena, and (d)the dissemination of research results to water managers and the public. The second responsibility is to cooperate closely with other colleges and universities in Connecticut that have demonstrated capabilities for research, information dissemination, and graduate training in order to develop a statewide program designed to resolve state and regional water and related land problems. IWR responds to topical environmental issues in Connecticut through a state-wide Advisory Board and an academic Technical Committee which creates a close consultation and collaboration with various state and federal environmental agencies, leading water resources officials and interested members of the public. In addition to facilitating applied and basic research in response to annual priorities established by these support bodies, the Institute conducts a seminar series each year, which provides a forum for all water-related interests to present and discuss related environmental issues.
