The Operators
Marjorie Gray (d. 1924).
Mrs. Gray became the state's first female operator on
March 24, 1879, in Bridgeport. The operator force originally
consisted entirely of boys but their rudeness garnered many
complaints from subscribers. Women were found to be more
courteous and efficient.By the turn of the century women
were thoroughly established in this still-new occupation.
