Pancallo (Ralph J.) Papers    Finding Aid

Mr. Pancallo was a long-standing member of the International Typographical Union (now the Communications Workers of America). He joined ITU in 1935 and in 1958, he took the position of Representative of the I.T.U., a position he held until his retirement in 1979. Ralph Pancallo also served as vice president of the Connecticut State Labor Council, secretary and president of the New Britain Central Labor Council, and as both president and treasurer of the New Britain Typographical Union #679 (now the Connecticut Typographical Union #679).

Born in 1927 in New Jersey, Parker is the illustrator of over forty children’s books. His work has been recognized with several prizes: 1970 Caldecott Honor for Pop Corn and Ma Goodness by Edna Mitchell Preston, 1972 American Institute of Graphics Arts Book Show for Liam’s Catch by Dorothy Parker and a 1982 American Library Association Notable Book award for The Whistling Skeleton edited by John Bierhorst.

The collection contains letters written to Charles Coleman Sellers of Ardmore,, Pennsylvania from Susan B. Pendleton of Hebron, Connecticut. Some of the letters are also addressed to "Helen", presumably Mrs. Charles Sellers. The poems in folder #10 were all included in correspondence sent to Mrs. Catherine Maybury Seelye of the Acquisitions Department in Wilbur Cross Library, University of Connecticut.

Collection consists primarily of correspondence and other materials relating to projects undertaken by McCurdy under the Penmaen imprint. Project folders typically include correspondence, manuscript drafts, galley proofs, and publicity materials relating to the work (sometimes including reviews). The published versions of most of these works are available through the Dodd Center (the call numbers are listed in a note at the end of this finding aid). The materials making up the Face to Face project are comprehensive, detailing preliminary visions for the project, working correspondence with each of the contributors, and specific records dealing with the binding and production of the finished work. The collection also includes broadsides signed by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg.

The collection consists of primarily of the correspondence of Robert Hauser and Michael McCurdy, friends and business partners from 1967 to 2003, as well as detailed documentation of the their collaboration in the creation of "Face to Face". In addition, the collection contains prospectus mailers, signed prints, original wood block engravings, and photographs ranging from 1967 to 2000, which document both the friendship and professional collaboration of the two men.

Collection includes correspondence from Cid Corman (1957-1960), written while Petersen was living in Japan and Corman was in Europe, Japan and San Francisco. The letters contain extensive discussions of literature and philosophy, Corman’s experiences as a teacher in Japan, and the literary scene in San Francisco. Also includes one letter from Corman to Gary Snyder (1957) and a copy of Petersen’s The Day of the Hundred Dances (1975) with holograph notes, two versions of “September Ridge” (photocopies of annotated and corrected typescripts), published in Gary Snyder: Dimensions of a Life; and photocopies of Berkeley Bussei 1956, with holograph notes.

Arthur Joseph Pierpont was born 3 December 1876. He was a 1895 graduate of Storrs Agricultural College, now the University of Connecticut. A noted authority on agricultural matters, Mr. Pierpont was a member of the Waterbury Milk Producers Association, Trustee of his alma mater (Connecticut Agricultural College as of 1899) and manager of the College's Gilbert Farm, a working farm in Georgetown, Connecticut bequeathed to the College in 1906.

The collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence of four members of the Powys family: (John, Theodore, Laurence (Francis) and Gertrude May (1877-1952); and newsclippings, portraits (sketches), and photographs. Also included is a portfolio of wood engravings by Gertrude. The bulk of the collection concerns John Cowper Powys and was acquired from him by a collector, Rex Parady. This portion of the collection includes correspondence between Powys and Parady in which Powys identifies various manuscripts and other items.

Included are approx. 5000 documents dated between 1840s to the 1890s, many of which are from the Arecibo civil (corte de primera instancia) court districts, covering the full range of cases that might have been brought to civil courts in those times including robbery, assault, lover's quarrels, and adultery as well as disputes over economic holdings such as land disputes, sale of slaves, and similar materials.
