Collection Number: MSS 2000-0105 Despite its primary emphasis on the blues and ragtime, the Samuel and Ann Charters Collection spans the entire 20th century, beginning with African-American Spirituals and the ragtime of Scott Joplin and other early composers, and ending with Snoop Doggy Dogg and the rappers of the late 20th century. The collection holds thousands of hours of recorded music on LP and 45 records, compact discs, audio cassettes, and reel-to-reel cassettes. Though some LP records date back to the 1940s, the compact discs in the collection include both recent and reissued material. Most of these recordings are commercial; and the Archives holds a complete catalog of music produced by the Arhoolie label, courtesy of label owner, Chris Strachwitz. The artists included in the Charters collection range from the most famous blues performers such as B.B. King and Robert Johnson, to obscure ragtime musicians. (CAAO) is a professional organization that is affiliated with the International Association of Assessing Officers. CAAO is comprised of nearly 500 regular and subscribing members. Regular membership is open to all State of Connecticut public officials who are engaged in the administration of property assessments, including assessors, employees of assessors offices and board of assessment appeals members. Subscribing membership is open to individuals or companies interested in property assessment or a related field. The mission of CAAO is to improve the standards of assessment practices within the State of Connecticut. To that end, the organization publishes a bi-monthly newsletter (the Assessoreporter) and the Handbook for Connecticut Assessors. CAAO is also closely involved in the Annual School for Assessors and Boards of Assessment Appeals, at which all the courses that are prerequisites for assessor certification are offered. If there is sufficient demand for a particular course, it can be offered at another time of the year. Various locations were considered and a site of twenty acres on Prospect Hill in Cornwall had been accepted when Edwin Whitney of Mansfield, ‘who had nearly completed a fine large building for a boys’ school, offered this building with the farm of fifty acres, all valued at $12,000 or $15,000, as a gift to the Home.’ Edwin Whitney conveyed by deed, title to the property to the Connecticut Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home, September 24, 1866. It began commercial operation in 1968 and produced over 110 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in its 29 years of service. In 1996 the CY Board of Directors voted to permanently close the plant and decommissioning of the plant has been underway since then.
