The collection spans many institutional name changes and reorganizations. The bulk of the collection is documentation from the Extension Service, which was headed by one of three Directors of the school, then known as Connecticut Agricultural College, with the President as the Executive head of the College. Collection Number: MSS 2000-0105 Despite its primary emphasis on the blues and ragtime, the Samuel and Ann Charters Collection spans the entire 20th century, beginning with African-American Spirituals and the ragtime of Scott Joplin and other early composers, and ending with Snoop Doggy Dogg and the rappers of the late 20th century. The collection holds thousands of hours of recorded music on LP and 45 records, compact discs, audio cassettes, and reel-to-reel cassettes. Though some LP records date back to the 1940s, the compact discs in the collection include both recent and reissued material. Most of these recordings are commercial; and the Archives holds a complete catalog of music produced by the Arhoolie label, courtesy of label owner, Chris Strachwitz. The artists included in the Charters collection range from the most famous blues performers such as B.B. King and Robert Johnson, to obscure ragtime musicians. (CAAO) is a professional organization that is affiliated with the International Association of Assessing Officers. CAAO is comprised of nearly 500 regular and subscribing members. Regular membership is open to all State of Connecticut public officials who are engaged in the administration of property assessments, including assessors, employees of assessors offices and board of assessment appeals members. Subscribing membership is open to individuals or companies interested in property assessment or a related field. The mission of CAAO is to improve the standards of assessment practices within the State of Connecticut. To that end, the organization publishes a bi-monthly newsletter (the Assessoreporter) and the Handbook for Connecticut Assessors. CAAO is also closely involved in the Annual School for Assessors and Boards of Assessment Appeals, at which all the courses that are prerequisites for assessor certification are offered. If there is sufficient demand for a particular course, it can be offered at another time of the year. Various locations were considered and a site of twenty acres on Prospect Hill in Cornwall had been accepted when Edwin Whitney of Mansfield, ‘who had nearly completed a fine large building for a boys’ school, offered this building with the farm of fifty acres, all valued at $12,000 or $15,000, as a gift to the Home.’ Edwin Whitney conveyed by deed, title to the property to the Connecticut Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home, September 24, 1866. Collection Number: MSS 1996-0009 From 1963 to 1975, Foster Gunnison, Jr. collected the records of the Eastern Conference of Homophile Organizations (ECHO), an early coalition of organizations seeking the creation of a national homophile organization, and the records of gay and lesbian organizations throughout the United States. He founded his own organization, the Institute for Social Ethics (ISE), "a libertarian-oriented research facility and think tank for controversial social issues", in the early 1960's. In 1967 Gunnison authored, and the ISE published, the pamphlet An Introduction to the Homophile Movement which outlined the history, aims and objectives of the movement and profiles of organizations active in the movement. The collection is strongest for the late nineteenth century and contains newspapers from virtually every country of Latin America and the Caribbean. The most notable portion of the collection is represented by newspapers from Bolivia and Peru. Twenty-nine cities of Bolivia are represented with major holdings from the cities of La Paz and Cochabamba. Newspaper titles are available from 18 cities of Peru. Little worked as a parole officer and psychologist for the Clinton Farms for Women, another correctional institution, in Clinton, New Jersey before serving as Secretary for the Connecticut Unemployment Commission. By 1933, with the creation of the Connecticut Emergency Relief Commission by Governor Wilbur Cross, she became secretary and later administrator of this agency. Collection Number: MSS 1990-0056 Born in Yonkers in 1930, Joel Oppenheimer was a student of Charles Olson's at Black Mountain College from 1950-1953. He published over a dozen books of poetry, a play, a book on baseball, and was a columnist for the "Village Voice" from 1968 to 1984. Oppenheimer was the first director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in Greenwich Village (from 1966 to 1968) and was an active teacher of poetry throughout his life. He died of complications from cancer in 1988. The collection contains only a small amount of Oppenheimer's writing and correspondence prior to his time at Black Mountain College. The Black Mountain period itself is also represented somewhat poorly, although there are a few items of ephemera. The content of the collection becomes more comprehensive in the late 1950s and into the 1960s, with a substantial number of poetry manuscripts and a wider range of correspondence. While most all of Oppenheimer's published poems are represented in the collection, it is difficult to discern between first drafts and later copies. Oyez Press Records Finding Aid

Collection Number: MSS 2000-0120 The Stickels Photograph Collection of Central New England Railway contains 639 negatives and black and white photographic prints. The majority of the images were taken between the 1880s and the 1930s, with just one from the 1940s and only two from the 1950s. A majority of the images are of steam locomotives from various New England railroads, although the Central New England Railway steam locomotives are the most heavily represented. Also in the collection are images of railroad stations and yards, wreck scenes, bridges, and work scenes. Some of the more unique images include a negative image of a map of the Hartford, Connecticut, to Springfield, Massachusetts, rail line, as well as a promotional photographic print displaying the interior of a new passenger car.
