History
The Hartford Stock Exchange operated throughout the late nineteenth century, and by the early twentieth century traded stock in local railroad companies; local banks and trust companies; fire, life, and other indemnity insurance companies; local public utilities and manufacturing companies; American Brass Company, American Thread Company, and American Hardware Company; and numerous other companies throughout the state. The exchange ceased to exist by 1935 as AT&T's introduction of long distance telephone lines in the United States in 1933 dissolved the need for a seperate exchange in Hartford. Additionally, the establishment of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 1934, and the commission's subsequent investigation into trading practices, may also have caused the Hartford Stock Exhange to dissolve.
