The American Thermos Bottle Company, manufacturer of vacuum-insulated bottles and lunch kits, built a plant in Norwich in 1912 and another plant in the Taftville section of Norwich in 1946. By the 1960s Thermos was Norwich's largest employer, with 1200 workers in the two plants. After Household International Inc. bought the company in 1969 they gradual moved production to the southern United States and abroad, and both plants were closed by the mid-1980s.
