4-H Clubs of Connecticut Records (UConn) Finding Aid
undated, [1906]-1977 The 4-H Clubs of Connecticut originated in 1913 with the establishment of the first club in Mansfield, Connecticut. A part of the United States Department of Agriculture's Cooperative Extension System, 4-H clubs have aimed to educate Connecticut's youth in agriculture, home economics, and new technologies. The 4-H Clubs of Connecticut also strives to imbue its members with important life skills, building character through the teaching of a variety of practical skills. The records consist of the papers of Connecticut 4-H club leader Augustus Jackson Brundage, who helped expand the clubs in the state following World War I, as well as numerous club publications, photographs, scrapbooks, slides, film, and administrative records. 1840-1951 The collection reflects the many bureaucratic permutations of the Department of Agricultural Economics from the late 1910s until after World War II. The collection spans many institutional name changes and reorganizations. The bulk of the collection is documentation from the Extension Service, which was headed by one of three Directors of the school, then known as Connecticut Agricultural College, with the President as the Executive head of the College. Under him were three Directors, the two others being the Faculty and the Director of Instruction, and the Director of the Experimental Station. Allen (Irving L.) Papers Finding Aid
undated, 1960-1975 The Irving Allen Papers consist primarily of printed research materials on "New Towns". A type of urban planning, the "new towns" approach first became popular in England after World War II to alleviate overcrowding in London. The planning involves the creation of communities that offer housing as well as schools, fire and police departments, roads, local government and enough facilities and job opportunities for its residents. Rowland's "Back to Basics" budget. The OGSA was established to advocate on behalf of GAs for the restoration of their collective bargaining rights. 1966-1975 Capra ran twice as the Republican candidate for mayor for the city of New Haven (1969, 1971). In 1969, after receiving the GOP nomination, Capra was narrowly defeated by the Democratic candidate, Bartholomew F. Guida in New Haven's closest mayoral race in 18 years. Two years later, Capra ran again on the Republican ticket but Guida was re-elected by a wide margin. Capra dropped out of New Haven politics and accepted the position of Director of Development at the University of Connecticut. Carlson (Eric W.) Papers (UConn) Finding Aid
1942-2004 Eric W. Carlson was an Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Connecticut, teaching from 1942 to 1979. Professor Carlson was a notable scholar of Edgar Allen Poe and Ralph Waldo Emerson, producing numerous articles and books about the authors. His papers consist of notes, manuscripts, correspondence, syllabi, lectures, reports, and other assorted materials related to his tenure as a professor at the University of Connecticut. undated, 1988-1999 The collection contains materials collected by Dr. Cazenave in his struggle to develop and teach a course on White Racism at the University of Connecticut. The course was first proposed as a Special Topics seminar in the Sociology department. After submission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Curricula and Courses Committee, the proposal was tabled twice before it was finally approved. In the interim, Dr. Cazenave turned to the media to garner support. After intense opposition, the Special Topics seminar was offered in 1996 and became a permanent course (graduate and undergraduate) a year later. The collection contains correspondence, proposals and supporting materials, clippings, publications, notes, audio recordings and a video recording documenting the three-year struggle to have the course included in the curriculum of the University. He was employed by the University of Iowa from 1945 to 1947, when he joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut. Clark specialized in developmental biology and retired from the University in 1983. undated, 1912-2002 The Connecticut Association of Assessing Officers, Inc. (CAAO) is a professional organization that is affiliated with the International Association of Assessing Officers. CAAO is comprised of nearly 500 regular and subscribing members. Regular membership is open to all State of Connecticut public officials who are engaged in the administration of property assessments, including assessors, employees of assessors offices and board of assessment appeals members. Subscribing membership is open to individuals or companies interested in property assessment or a related field. The mission of CAAO is to improve the standards of assessment practices within the State of Connecticut. To that end, the organization publishes a bi-monthly newsletter (the Assessoreporter) and the Handbook for Connecticut Assessors. CAAO is also closely involved in the Annual School for Assessors and Boards of Assessment Appeals, at which all the courses that are prerequisites for assessor certification are offered. If there is sufficient demand for a particular course, it can be offered at another time of the year. undated, 1956-1968 In 1955, the Connecticut General Assembly authorized funding for the construction of a junior-senior high school in Mansfield, Connecticut, to be administered by the University of Connecticut. 1973-1984 In 1973, Marcia Lieberman was denied tenure with the University of Connecticut English Department. The same year, she initiated a class action suit against the institution, charging sexual discrimination on behalf of all women who had served or sought employment on or after 1 October 1967. 1915-1968 The Faculty Club of the Connecticut Agricultural College was founded in 1915. It was established as a social organization open to "all male members of the several college staffs whose names appear in the catalog." 1770-1909 The papers concern three individuals from Ashford, Windham County, CT. Stephen Fitts, John Moore and Frederick Knowlton are all mentioned in the papers. One 1834 letter of interest was written by Lorraine Preston, probably the sister of John Moore, describing the migration to Ohio and the great opportunities that existed there at the time. The correspondence reveals that after World War II, paid employment outside of the home increasingly precluded attendance at the club's meetings and programs. The focus of the programs and projects suggest some of the larger society's concerns, as well as establishing a timeline for the introduction of certain technological innovations into Connecticut life. undated, 1925-1984 Upon graduation, Gaylord became the first 4-H Club Agent in Tolland County. Three years later, he obtained a similar position in Litchfield County. In 1942, he joined the University of Connecticut Extension Service as an animal husbandry specialist. He held this post until his retirement on 1 March 1965. In 1929, Gaylord married Margaret Grace Root. Born in Pleasantville, NY, Margaret received her early education in East Berlin and Middletown, CT. She also attended CAC. Awarded a degree in Home Economics in 1928, the soon-to-be Mrs. Gaylord taught Home Economics in Milford, Willimantic, and Rockville, CT, in addition to later employment in various capacities at the University. n.d., 1954-1972 This five-year project, officially titled "Work Simplification in the Area of Child Care for Physically Handicapped Women", was sponsored by the School of Home Economics, University of Connecticut, in cooperation with the "Team Approach" Committee on Research Demonstrations and Workshops Concerning Physically Handicapped Women. The main work of the project occurred between 1955 and 1960. Among the goals of the project were (1) to demonstrate the ways in which the competence of physically handicapped mothers of pre-school children may be increased in the area of child care, through the application of the principles of work simplification, (2) to explore the vocational rehabilitation possibilities of physically handicapped women, in the area of child care, for work in nursery schools, in day care centers or as "baby sitters", and (3) to study the effectiveness of the methods developed in terms of human values and family relationships as well as in increased efficiency. At the time of her retirement, over 60 courses were being offered in the arts program. n.d., 1902-1926 Arthur Joseph Pierpont was born 3 December 1876. He was a 1895 graduate of Storrs Agricultural College, now the University of Connecticut. Following graduation Mr. Pierpont studied business in Hartford, Connecticut, before taking advanced agricultural sciences course at Cornell University. Upon his return to Connecticut, Pierpont took over the family homestead in Waterbury, Connecticut. At Maple Hill Farm, Pierpont established one of the first Holstein herds in the state and became a leading milk producer in the Naugatuck Valley. A noted authority on agricultural matters, Mr. Pierpont was a member of the Waterbury Milk Producers Association, Trustee of his alma mater (Connecticut Agricultural College as of 1899) and manager of the College's Gilbert Farm, a working farm in Georgetown, Connecticut bequeathed to the College in 1906.
